Introduction to SNNU

Directly administered by the Ministry of Education of China, Shaanxi Normal University, a key university under the construction plan of China’s national “211 Project" and a university under China’s Innovation Platform Construction Plan of the“985” Superior Discipline of Teacher Education, is a major base for training teachers and administrators of higher learning institutes and secondary schools as well as other high-level professionals in China, and is known as the “Cradle of Teachers” in Northwest China.

The University, situated in the ancient capital city of Xi’an, one of the four internationally renowned historical and cultural cities, was founded in 1944 under its original name "Shaanxi Provincial Teachers’ College", and then renamed "Xi’an Teachers’ College" in 1954. In 1960, it merged with "Shaanxi Teachers’ College" to become "Shaanxi Normal University". In 1978, it was brought under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education of China. 

During its more than 70-year history in education, the University, while rooted in China’s West, has embraced the whole country, developed a school spirit of “Morality, Learning, Aspiration and Action” and has seen itself become firmly established in Western China as an influential top-tier comprehensive teachers training university, as it strives to achieve the goal of building itself to be a major comprehensive research university distinguished by its teacher education.

Shaanxi Normal University has started training international students since 1965. The International School of Chinese Studies, an important window of the university’s international exchange and cooperation, was established in July 2005. Focusing on teaching Chinese language and culture at home and abroad and with the responsibility of teaching and research work for Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages and receiving international students, the International School of Chinese Studies has cultivated more than 8000 international students till now.

The School now has nearly 30 full-time teachers and over 60 part-time teachers. 37% of them are holding senior academic titles and 58% of them have doctoral degree. With the teaching concept of “Putting Students First” and their strict yet professional teaching methods, they have won praise from the international students.

Features of Tuition

The International School of Chinese Studies has a full range of programs for educating different students, from language students to undergraduate, master and doctoral students. Presently, the school receives short-term student groups from America, Australia, Japan, Korea Thailand and etc. We have American Fulbright short-term program, Edith Cowan University(Australia), Nara University and Tsuru University(Japan)short-term programs, Summer(winter) camps of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, Chinese bridge-Summer(Winter)camps for overseas college students.

We integrate into our curriculum Xi’an city’s regional features by bringing into the cultural study field trips to some of the famous tourist sites of Xi’an, thus making the most out of students’ learning experience. The school practices teaching students differently in accordance with their aptitude and characteristics, providing small-sized class and one-on-one instruction to meet students’ needs.

We have amiable and experienced teachers to serve for the students’ free and comprehensive development.

Chinese Language and Culture Education Center

The Chinese Language and Culture Education Center at Shaanxi Normal University is the first one in Northwest China set by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council. Drawing strength from the university’s strong background in humanities and social science and bringing into full play of the special advantage of the School in teaching Chinese as a foreign language, the school has successfully run the Summer (Winter) Camp for overseas Chinese youth and Training Course for overseas Chinese teachers, compiled textbooks for teacher’s training and the camp, and conducted theoretical research in the subject.

Following the concept of “Outstanding Features and Serving Education”, the school, drawing on the rich historical and cultural resources, with its colorful and varied course design, thoughtful and considerate arrangement, has successfully hosted and organized several projects such as the Overseas Chinese Youth Kungfu Winter Camp, Overseas Chinese Teachers’ Training, Donggan Scholarship Students’ Education, All the projects has won wide acclaim and praise from the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office and the participants as well.

Teaching Facilities

The School has two classroom buildings for its own use, with multimedia classrooms, computer rooms, language labs, reading rooms, reception rooms, conference rooms, Chinese culture experience rooms and multi-function activity rooms, etc., ready to hold 600 students for class. The three dormitories “Qixia Yuan” ,“Tiantan Xuan”and “Yihao Yuan” have more than 150 rooms and “Qixia Yuan” is equipped with Chinese and Western restaurants, which can hold 300 students for board and lodging.

The university has two large libraries and the sports facilities of stadiums, gyms, swimming pools, etc. In the vicinity, there are large supermarkets, hospitals, banks, a post office, internet cafes, and furnished apartments for renting, meeting the needs of students in their study and life. For students’ relaxation after intensive learning, there are also entertainment places like cinemas, KTV, table tennis halls nearby.
