The Center for Chinese Studies,Shanghai Maritime University

The Center for Chinese Studies (CCS), which is affiliated with both the College of Foreign Languages and the SMU International Exchange College, is engaged in the teaching of Chinese for overseas students. The center was founded in 1996, and was among the first seven institutions qualified to teach Chinese as a foreign language in Shanghai. So far, the center has instructed more than 1000 overseas students from twenty countries such as Britain, Canada,France, India, Japan, Korea and the US. The Center for Chinese Studies boasts a large staff, most of whom have extensive teaching experience. To ensure high pedagogical quality, the center follows the small-class teaching system. In September 2003, the PRC’s Ministry of Commerce authorized the center to train Burmese civil servants in Chinese. Sixteen of the first nineteen Burmese students, who had no previous knowledge of Chinese, passed the HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test) Band 6 at their first attempt after just ten-month’s training. Two of them were even able to pass HSK B and 8. Such a high pass rate (of 83 percent) is rare among the Chinese-teaching institutions. While ensuring pedagogical quality, the center organizes activities aimed to develop students’ practical application of the language. Such activities include tours, speech competitions in Chinese, photography competitions and Chinese calligraphy competitions, all of which provide overseas students with opportunities to practice their Chinese and absorb Chinese culture. The center follows the small-class teaching method. To meet students’ needs, the center offers a variety of courses: long-term courses, crash courses, summer/winter vacation courses, etc. In 2004, the representative of the Centre was awarded The Second Prize at the Shanghai International Students Speech Contest. In 2008, SMU Int’l Students’ Dragon Boat Team ranked the Fourth among the nineteenth teams in The First Shanghai Int’l Students’ Dragon Boat Racing Competition.
