“Silk Road” Assistance Fund

In 2013, Chinese President Xi Jin-ping put forward the strategic initiative of jointly building “Silk Road Economic Belt” and “21st-Century Maritime Silk Road”, advocating the reinforcement of interconnection and exchange with adjacent countries of “One Belt& One Road”. To answer the initiative, International Education College of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine sets up “Silk Road” Assistance Fund which aims to provide financial assistance for 15 international students annually.

The “Silk Road” Assistance Fund (hereinafter referred to as “SRAF”) is going to be issued to excellent international students from adjacent countries of “One Belt& One Road” for their study of Chinese language and professional degrees.

Ⅰ.Eligibility:

To be eligible, applicants must:

1.be a citizen of one of the countries including Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Russia, Thailand, Mongolia, Malaysia, and be in good state of health. (Applications of students from adjacent countries of “One Belt& One Road” other than these countries shall be determined by International Education College.)

2.comply with the laws and regulations of the Chinese government as well as the regulations and code of conduct of the university.

3.hold earnest learning attitude and present excellent academic performance.

4.finish at least one semester of Chinese language course or TCM Preparatory Program in the university and meet the acceptance requirement of either TCM Preparatory Program or degree programs of the university taught either in Chinese or in English. (Students can submit the application for SRAF during their first half-year study of Chinese language course or TCM Preparatory Program)

5.pass all examinations and finish all courses in this period with attendance rate higher than 80% during the study of Chinese language or TCM Preparatory Program.

6.have not obtained Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC Excellent Self-Support Scholarship not included), Shanghai Government Scholarship, or Discipline Scholarship and Assistance Fund.

7.have not obtained Golden Key Scholarship or Pre-admission Scholarship of the university.

8.be permitted to apply for SRAF for preparatory program as well as bachelor, master or doctoral degree programs.

Ⅱ Application Procedure

1.Commencing date and deadline for application:

TCM Preparatory Program(Fall):March.1st-June.30th

TCM Preparatory Program (spring):December.1st- Feburary.28th

Undergraduate Degree Program: March.1st-June.30th

Master, Doctoral Degree Program: March.1st-June.30th

2.Applicants shall fill in “Silk Road” Assistance Fund Application Form for International Student of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine(hereinafter referred to as “Application Form”

3.After filling the Application Form, applicants need to hand in the Application Form along with other required material to admission office.

4.Applicant must guarantee the authenticity of the material. Once the material or information provided is found to be false or fraudulent, his or her candidacy for SRAF will be cancelled and the applicant shall bear all the consequences.

Ⅲ.Type, Criteria and Award of SRAF

1.Type and Criteria of Financial Assistance

Doctoral Degree Program: RMB 30000 per year

Master Degree Program: RMB 20000 per year

Undergraduate Degree Program: RMB 10000 per year

TCM Preparatory Program: RMB 5000 per semester

2.Award of SRAF

(1)The college shall evaluate and verify the submitted material

(2)After the verification, the college will publicize the list of candidates for no less than 3 working days. If no objection or dissent is received, the candidates will be qualified for receiving SRAF.

(3)The college will inform the applicants the result of their application in written form.

SRAF will be granted to students in TCM Preparatory Programs on the 15th week of each semester and to degree program students on next January each year after the students have fulfilled payment of the tuition fee.

Ⅳ.Annual Evaluation of SRAF

1.Postgraduate Program

(1)The annual evaluation of SRAF in postgraduate program takes place in September.

(2)Candidates’ academic performance and conducts will be evaluated to determine if their qualification for SRAF can be maintained in the following academic years.

If the candidate passes all the examinations in the first academic year and keeps good conducts, his or her qualification for SRAF in the second academic year can be maintained.

If candidate wins approval for thesis proposal and interim report and keeps good conducts in the second academic year, his or her qualification for SRAF in the third academic year can be maintained.

2.Undergraduate Program

(1)The annual evaluation of SRAF in undergraduate program takes place in September.

(2)Candidates’ academic performance and conducts will be evaluated to determine if their qualification for SRAF can be maintained in the following academic years.

If the candidate’s GPA is kept no lower than 2.0 in previous academic year, his or her qualification for SRAF in the following academic year can be maintained. If the candidate’s GPA is lower than 2.0, his or her qualification for SRAF in the following academic year will be suspended.

3.Preparatory Program

If the candidate passes all examinations and finishes all courses in this period with a attendance rate no lower than 80%, his or her qualification for SRAF in the following academic year can be maintained.

Ⅴ. Precautions

Candidates will be granted SRAF only after fulfilling the full payment of annual tuition. If the candidate violates the laws and regulations of Chinese government or code of conducts and regulations of the university before SRAF is granted, or if the candidate is dropped out from the university, or fails to go through the annual evaluation process, for students in TCM preparatory Program, the candidacy will be cancelled for that semester, and for students in degree program the candidacy will be cancelled for that academic year.

If an international students has applied for interruption of study, his or her SRAF will be put to abeyance. The amount of SRAF will not be issued retrospectively whereas the student’s candidacy will continue once he or she resumes to study. If during his or her study the international student has received written warning, academic probation, or has violated university regulation and discipline, or discontinued schooling, his or her candidacy for SRAF will be cancelled.

Ⅵ.Other Specification

This plan shall come into force once it is issued.

This plan applies to student who has registered as full-time students in Chinese language course or TCM Preparatory Program by September 2014.

The final interpretation of this plan is owned by International Education College of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
